I remember watching Gomer Pyle many years ago on TV. Sergeant Carter would get into the face of Gomer and yell his instructions. Gomer really respected the sergeant as the one in charge and leading him to do the right thing. Fear of the sergeant was used to get what he wanted from all the men. They would follow his instruction or pay a price.
That is not how we are to fear the Lord. God welcomes us into his presence. The type of fear the Bible refers to is more of being in awe of and reverence towards God. We don’t want to displease him, but not because we are terrified, but because of the love we have for him. We realize who God is in being the creator, while we are his creation. He is the obvious one to obey.
The love God showers on us should demonstrate his attitude towards us. He doesn’t want us to live in chaos, but in shalom … total peace. But we can’t experience that unless we submit to God.
Prayer: Lord, I thank you for the great love you have for me. I pray that today I will obey you so that I can experience the peace that passes understanding that you offer. Amen
Faith Tip: Begin the day with giving God praise. He is worthy.
