Loosening Our Grasp

Holding on Tight

“I am God—yes, I Am. I haven’t changed. And because I haven’t changed, you, the descendants of Jacob, haven’t been destroyed. You have a long history of ignoring my commands. You haven’t done a thing I’ve told you. Return to me so I can return to you,” says God-of-the-Angel-Armies.

“You ask, ‘But how do we return?’

“Begin by being honest. Do honest people rob God? But you rob me day after day.

“You ask, ‘How have we robbed you?’

“The tithe and the offering—that’s how! And now you’re under a curse —the whole lot of you—because you’re robbing me. Bring your full tithe to the Temple treasury so there will be ample provisions in my Temple. Test me in this and see if I don’t open up heaven itself to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams. For my part, I will defend you against marauders, protect your wheat fields and vegetable gardens against plunderers.” The Message of God-of-the-Angel-Armies.

“You’ll be voted ‘Happiest Nation.’ You’ll experience what it’s like to be a country of grace.” God-of-the-Angel-Armies says so. – Malachi 3:7-12 The Message

We are a nation of fear, aren’t we? We watch the stock markets, and the gas prices, go up and down. The unemployment rate is too high, along with the physical needs such as clothes, food, and shelter for families to survive. We clutch our resources with both hands thinking we own them. There is fear in letting go … even for God.

Perhaps together we can take baby steps of faith in letting go and letting God take over. We must realize that God owns it all. It’s not that he needs our offering for his arm is not too short to cover any needs, but it is for our growth in trusting God that we need to follow this Scripture. God invites us to test him. He wants to bless us beyond what we imagine. Let us give him opportunity to do that. And in doing so, our relationship with God will grow and bloom.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the abundance of gifts you have given me. Forgive me when I haven’t acknowledged your provision or taken it for granted. I pray that I can let go of what I have and let you do something wonderful for your kingdom. Amen

Faith Tip: What is your fear in giving to God? Voice it. This will lessen the power it has over you. Then take baby steps to loosen your grip on your resources and watch what God will do.

  1. Hi,
I believe that Christians should give both to their church and to the poor outside the church. But why should Mal 3:8-12 be used to encourge giving in today? Was not the passage addressed to the descendants of Jacob?

I haven’t changed. And because I haven’t changed, you, the descendants of Jacob, haven’t been destroyed. You have a long history of ignoring my commands.

I see no reason therefore why this passage should be applicable to Christians today. We are called to observe the teachings of Jesus Christ and not the old ordinances given to Israel via Moses.
