Joy in mourning

Grandmother's Quilt: Overhead View of Squares ...

Shout for joy, you heavens;
   rejoice, you earth;
   burst into song, you mountains!
For the LORD comforts his people
   and will have compassion on his afflicted ones. – Isaiah 49:13

The women surround Gladys who was lying on the couch covered with her favorite quilt. The pain had lessened a bit that afternoon, and the visit from these special friends made her smile. Gladys knew she would see the Lord face to face very soon. She knew that God had sent these women to her as a gift. They sang to her favorite songs of praise to God. She lifted her arm up to heaven in praise. His love for her was truly evident.

While the tears fell from the eyes of her friends, she encouraged them with how God showed his great love for her. She truly felt the joy of the Lord even in the midst of pain and eventual death. There was no fear. God had comforted her in many ways including this special visit.

It’s hard to praise God when we are experiencing challenges in life. It’s important to do so, just like Gladys did, to show our thankfulness in all he does for us. He doesn’t leave us as orphans or to rely on our own strength. He is right there with us helping us through the journey of life. We are in his protective hands. He writes our story and doesn’t stop until we breathe our last. If you are alive, there’s more to write.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for including me in your story. I pray that I can hang on to hope no matter what the day may bring. Amen

Faith Tip: Focus on the hope you have today and praise God for it.
