Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?
Do the skies themselves send down showers?
No, it is you, O LORD our God.
Therefore our hope is in you,
for you are the one who does all this. (Jeremiah 14:22)
The old man wondered what happened. He felt he had played his cards right. He went to the right school, married a woman of good standing, his business was successful, but here he was retired and rocking on the front porch alone. He wondered, am I waiting to die? Is that all there is to life? He began to weep as he thought about how his life felt so empty.
Relying on our own strengths will always leave us wanting more. There is a hole in each one of us that we continually try to fill. Using our own or the world’s power rather than God’s power will never fill the hole, but occasionally satisfy us for a time, but then will fade. Worshiping things of this world gets in the way of us worshiping God. We were made to worship and we will worship something, but the choice is ours.
We have real hope because of Jesus. God desires for us to have an abundant life, but that can’t happen without him. When we choose our own way of doing things, we choose to go against the hope that God wants to freely give us.
Prayer: Lord, I pray that I will choose you to worship and depend on in my life. I thank you for the wonderful ways you have blessed me with your presence each day. What would I do without you? Amen
Faith tip: Decide today whom or what you will worship and act on it.
